Keep Your Pet Calm and Carry On

Summer is around the corner, and it’s bringing fireworks and thunderstorms with it. Do you know what you need to do to keep your pet calm during this season of celebrations and scary noises?

Check Your Calm Before the Storm

During a summer storm, the first thing you can do to keep your furry friend calm is to reflect on your own state of mind and behavior. Dogs and cats are intuitive animals and are likely to feel anxious if they see that their human is visibly anxious.

There are several things you can do to calm yourself and your pet:

Set a soothing atmosphere with soft music and aromatherapy. Pet-friendly music and pet-safe essential oils can even be used to have a calming effect for your pets when you’re away.

Keep your fur baby’s mind off its anxiety with together activities. Sitting near and petting your dog or cat will help to soothe and relieve anxiety, fear or stress. And playing with your pet will allow it to exercise and get out some of that anxious energy.

When in doubt, take a time out. Have a quiet space where you can keep your pet closed in with soothing, familiar smells, no stimulation and as much sound-proofing to the outside world as possible.

Fireworks and Your Furry Friend

The best thing that you can do for your pets when there are fireworks is to leave them inside. Remember: A quiet space free of outdoor noises and stimuli is the best place for your pets when it’s loud outside!

If your pet is out with you during summer festivities, make sure that you avoid using any insect repellent or sunscreen on your pet that isn’t pet-safe! Even if it isn’t toxic for humans, it might not be good for your furry friends. Alcoholic drinks and common barbecue and party fare are also not healthy to give your pets free access to!
