There is no denying that French Bulldogs are extra lovable, cute and photogenic. It is well known that their face genetics impact their ability to breathe normally and regulate body temperature, making it a little more challenging for them to fly on an airplane. However, under the right conditions, your Frenchie can safely fly in cargo to almost any international destination.
Here are 5 tips to ensure your French Bulldog has a safe and stress-free flight.
1. Get a Pre-Flight Health-Checkup
Even if you think your pup is in perfect shape, be sure to take them to the vet for a health checkup to see if there are any underlying conditions you might be unaware of. If they are flying internationally or to another state, a health certificate will most likely be required by the airline 10 days prior to your travel date.
2. Pick Flight Times Carefully
Most American airlines already enforce summer and winter restrictions for the comfort and safety of your pet. However, it is still important to use your own judgment when booking flights for your dog (you might depart from a cold climate in the US and land in a hot climate elsewhere). The cargo hold is temperature-controlled, but the seasonal weather factors come into play in transit to and from the plane. Avoid flights in the middle of the day during the hotter months and night trips in the colder months.
3. Crate Train In Advance
Be sure to purchase your travel crate well in advance so you can start training early. Take the crate on car journeys and go through the car wash so they can get used to the movement, all while giving them tons of praise while they are in the crate. Flying can be stressful for dogs, but if they are already trained to view their crate as a “safe space”, they are less likely to experience stress or anxiety. We also suggest avoiding heavy blankets and fluffy towels to minimize the risk of overheating.
4. Avoid Indirect Flights Where Possible
Flying direct is worth the extra money for your Frenchie’s comfort and your own peace of mind. Flights with transfers mean your pup has to spend a longer time in transit, and the goal is to get them to their next location as quickly and safely as possible. If there is no other option and you must book an indirect flight, make sure there isn’t an extreme variation of temperature in the layover location.
5. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
An obvious one, but it’s something that is easy to forget. Make sure you purchase a water bottle that is specifically designed to be attached to crates. If the flight is long and indirect, make sure the airline will provide a comfort stop for your pet, and for shorter flights and layovers, make sure they check your pet’s water level.
